The American market is responsible for the development of the SUV and many of its’ variations.  Not being fans of the hatchback like their European brethren, the US market has spurred the development of many niche categories of SUV.

For evidence of that just look at how Audi and BMW have sliced up their various SUV offerings.

Not to be left out, Mercedes Benz is launching their own version of the compact SUV, the GLA which is scheduled to arrive in 2014.

The reality is that this vehicle is a high riding version of the upgraded A class, but if history is anything to go by, it will be as popular as the new revised Compact A class (CLA) has been.

Leading with AMG

Naturally the way to get everyone’s attention is to release a fire breathing version which Mercedes has done with the recent  release of the 2014 GLA AMG

Power is provided by a Euro 6-compliant 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine borrowed from the A 45 AMG and CLA 45 AMG. It delivers a more than adequate 360 HP (265 kW) and 450 Nm (331 lb-ft) transferred to the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system via a seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT transmission.

It will sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in 4.8 seconds onto an electronically-capped speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). The GLA 45 AMG can return 37.6 mpg UK (31.3 mpg US or 7.5 liters / 100 km) with corresponding CO2 emissions of 175 g/km.
