Toyota Tundra Wins Full Size Stock Class at Baja 1000
With the Toyota Tundra now available in Australia, prospective buyers might be interested to see just how touch their truck will be. They’ll be pleased with the vehicles performance at the recent Baja 1000 race.
Despite incurring considerable damage including sheet-metal tearing on the side of the truck, the Toyota Tundra TRD won its Full Stock Class in the 2014 Tecate Score Baja 1000. The Tundra TRD Pro series, which was specifically designed to compete in the 47th running of the famed off-road race in the harsh terrain of the Mexican desert, finished 69th overall out of the 131 participants present.
The TRD, which crossed the finish line in under 36 hours, was first among the four teams with a time of 35:40:40.581. Other competitors in the full stock race included the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 series with a time of 36:30:06:529, a Ford F-150 Raptor SVT with a time of 49 hours, 36 minutes and a Hummer H1 that did not finish the race.
The TRD was first displayed at the SEMA convention in LA, and it featured slight modifications for safety and carrying supplies. After the show, the truck was air lifted to Mexico along with three TRD support vehicles and Toyotas legendary off-road racer, Ivan “Ironman” Stewart, who coached the TRD Pro desert team that included an impressive list of drivers.
The TRD drivers included motor cross driver Andy Bell, Ryan Millen, Ted Moncure and Jamie Bestwick. With Andy Bell leading the driving effort, the TRD finished 35:40:40.581 behind Ford’s trophy truck class winners Rob MacCachren, Andy McMillan, and Jason Voss.
According Mike Sweers, Tundra’s chief engineer, the Tundra TRD Pro’s performance at the Baja 1000 was another test to ensure that Toyota’s trucks quality, dependability, and reliability continue to go beyond the expectations of their customers.
