Mercedes-AMG GT3 Race Car Revealed
It was just a matter of time before Mercedes-AMG revealed its mad new GT3 racer. This angry-looking and hedonistic 2016 version of the GT series will replace the current SLS AMG GT3.
One look at its swoops, vents, side-pipes and the enormous rear wing says it all: the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT3 racer means business. Engineered to comply with the FIA’s specifications, this new supercar will go head on with racing rivals Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren.
Beyond that, the GT3 receives significant body alterations including a reshaped grille flanked by flared guards, a wider body and track: creating a robust and hunkered-down appearance, lightweight space frame chassis, and an aggressive aerodynamic package. Additionally, the hood, front and rear wings, doors, and diffusers are made of carbon fiber to help keep the weight down.
The interior retains the basic framework of a road car, with a bank of switches on the centre console, intricate race-spec-digital instruments, and carbon regulation bucket seats.
Mechanically, this new GT3 will adopt the massive 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 found in the current SLS AMG GTS, rather than the regular AMG GT’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8.
According to AMG, the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine comes with extensive maintenance intervals and low running costs making it more cost effective for the enormous demands of GT3 racing.
In addition, the engine will be mated to a 6-speed-transaxle mounted sequential racing gearbox to drive the rear wheels, unlike the road-going GT that utilizes a dual clutch transmission.
Although not much information has been released about this beast, it’s likely we could see a more hardcore supercar on the horizon for 2016.
