Mercedes-AMG to rival the likes of Porsche,McLaren P1, and LaFerrari
Mercedes-Benz and its performance division AMG have supposedly revealed their plans to build a fully fledged sports car brand to rival the likes of Porsche and Ferrari.
According to Dr Zetsche, Mercedes-Benz boss, in an exclusive interview during the launch of the new Mercedes AMG C63, the plan is to expand the AMG range into a standalone sports car brand and transform it into a less tuning division of Mercedes Benz. A transformation that he believes will continue if they keep on adding more AMG models.
Although the potential supercar is way off from becoming a reality, Mercedes is lagging behind the game, with electric performance cars such as the Porsche 918 Spyder and BMW’s hybrid i8 already in the showrooms.
According to AMG’s Head of Engine and Powertrain Development, Christian Enderle, who has also admitted that AMG is considering a flagship hypercar similar to the Porsche 918 Spyder and LaFerrari, the battery powered SLS AMG Electric Drive concept car will create the basis for the production of a super sports car with an electric or hybrid powertrain.
The supercar will also be marketed as an actual Porsche challenger, which implies that it will be comparatively lighter in weight with superior handling and dynamic driver interaction.
Additionally, the car will be fitted with an electrical module to perk up the car’s efficiency developed from Formula 1. These new advancements will be an entirely new definition of these kinds of “power hybrids.”
All we can do at this point is speculate, but AMG undoubtedly has the tech and the engineering to pull this one off.
